Call for Submissions: Jazz Perspectives
The editorial team for the journal Jazz Perspectives invites submissions for upcoming volumes on a rolling basis. Under new editorial leadership, the journal is committed to expanding the scope, methods, and voices of jazz scholarship. We seek work that moves beyond inherited disciplinary boundaries and challenges dominant narratives in jazz studies, particularly those centered on Euro-American perspectives. We aim to cultivate a forum that foregrounds global, relational, and critically-engaged approaches to jazz as both music and cultural practice.
With the above in mind, the editorial team invites submissions on a range of jazz scholarship. While we are open to all areas of jazz scholarship, we are especially keen to receive manuscripts in the following areas:
- Jazz canonicity
- Jazz criticism and historiography
- Jazz routes and roots
- Music technology’s impact on jazz, past and present
- Jazz–politics, conflict, and war
- Jazz, race, gender, class, sexualities
- Migration, diaspora, and transnational jazz communities
- Jazz vocalities and oral traditions
- Racialized instrumentation
- The jazz archive
- Jazz perspectives from Africa; Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and the Pacific Rim; the Caribbean, Latin America, and other regions in the Global South.
We especially encourage submissions that engage underrepresented perspectives, geographies, and methodologies, as well as work that bridges disciplinary boundaries.
Submissions may take the form of:
- Research articles
- Review essays
- Media and recording reviews
We also encourage edited, group submissions for special issues. The lead editor should first contact the editorial team to express interest in discuss their prospective issue.
Interested authors may submit their manuscripts through Jazz Perspectives’ online submissions platform.
About the Journal
As a refereed academic journal with an international editorial board of renowned jazz scholars, Jazz Perspectives provides a broad forum for promoting cross-disciplinary scholarly dialogue. Our mission is to stimulate the international study of jazz and its many musical and cultural communities, both past and present. The journal aims to bridge the jazz-as-music and jazz-as-culture divide, as well as to promote broader international perspectives on jazz traditions, discourses, and their legacies. We also welcome submissions from those unaffiliated with academic institutions. As a forum for historical inquiry, music analysis, and cultural studies, Jazz Perspectives is devoted to all aspects of – and all approaches to – jazz scholarship. In addition to articles, the journal includes reviews and essays on significant recent literature and new recordings and media.
