American studies programs and departments may periodically undergo internal and external review. The American Studies Association has a number of resources to assist such programs and departments when they undergo a review process.

The Guide for Program Review—whose creation was overseen by a past president of the association, Michael Cowan—contains an overview of this important process of academic self-governance, with particular attention to the challenges and opportunities inherent in conducting a review of an interdisciplinary area of study such as American Studies.
