WHEREAS when graduate students work as Graduate Assistants, Teaching Assistants and Research Assistants in universities and colleges they assume the role of employees in those institutions,
Be it resolved that the American Studies Association supports the right of graduate student Graduate Assistants, Teaching Assistants and Research Assistants to unionize and bargain collectively in promotion of their interests as employees and in support of a fair living wage and adequate benefits, and
Be it further resolved that the American Studies Association will collect and publicize information, gathered from present and former American Studies program chairs and graduate directors on unionizing campuses, assessing the compatibility of unionization with the academic mission of American Studies departments and programs.
