The training that American studies scholars receive early in their careers is often where the social life of the association takes root, and ongoing work in the association becomes a way for close early ties to develop alongside professionalization in the field.

Opportunities for Emerging Scholars

The ASA supports the work of emerging scholars through opportunities to present at the annual meeting and to assume positions of leadership within the association, through the Students' Committee among other forms of service.

Recognition of Emerging Scholars

The ASA also recognizes emerging scholars through the Ralph Henry Gabriel Prize and the Wise-Susman Prize for the best student paper at the convention.
