The American Studies Program at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia founded in 1693 that is located on lands originally inhabited by ancestors of the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway), Chickahominy, Eastern Chickahominy, Mattaponi, Monacan, Nansemond, Nottoway, Pamunkey, Patawomeck, Upper Mattaponi, and Rappahannock tribes, seeks applications for a visiting assistant teaching professor in American Studies for the 2024-2025 academic year. The position is an appointment in the American Studies Program, 3-3 teaching load. Appointment will begin August 10, 2024.

We seek a colleague with teaching and research that engages critical approaches to American Studies as an interdisciplinary field. We are looking for a colleague with training in American Studies. Also appropriate are fields including Art History, Anthropology, Digital Humanities, Ethnic Studies, Film and Screen Studies, Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, History, Indigenous Studies, LGBTQ Studies, Latin/E Studies, New Media, Religious Studies, or Sociology.

Duties include teaching in the American Studies Program. The successful applicant is expected to teach 3 courses per term, including the 2 sections of the Program’s Introductory course “Rethinking America” (fall) and 2 sections of a first-year writing seminar of the candidate’s own choosing (spring).

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in American Studies or a related field at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2024).

Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience in teaching undergraduate students. Evidence of scholarly achievement or demonstrated potential as a scholar. Evidence of the skills to teach introductory and writing intensive courses in American Studies.

Conditions of Employment:
This is a restricted position, limited to a specified term.
