Position:

Department of Asian and Asian American Studies

Associate or Full Professor of Asian American Studies and potential Chair of Asian and Asian American Studies

Starting Date:

August, 2023

Minimum Qualifications:

1) An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Asian American Studies, Ethnic or Gender Studies, or a relevant discipline in the Social Sciences or Humanities or closely-related field from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required;

2) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level;

3) Well-established record of scholarly productivity in the area of Asian American Studies;

4) Hold a tenured position at the Associate or Full Professor level. Appointment will be at current rank with tenure.

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Clear evidence of collaborative leadership;

2) Demonstrated evidence of faculty support;

3) Evidence of experience in academic program administration or serving as department/program chair;

4) Experience in grant writing and funding development;

5) Evidence of research that includes a focus on culture or related specializations within the field of Asian American Studies.

Duties:

The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community.  These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

Salary:

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The College:

As the second college of ethnic studies in the nation, the Cal State LA College of Ethnic Studies provides an interdisciplinary intellectual space that centers the histories, traditions, cultures, experiences, struggles, and accomplishments of diasporic communities of color, making connections between the local and transnational. It currently houses three academic departments: Asian and Asian American Studies, Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies, and Pan-African Studies.

The Department:

Asian and Asian American Studies (AAAS) is a small but vibrant academic unit. AAAS started as a BA degree program in the fall of 2004, and in May of 2019, AAAS was granted full departmental status. AAAS has successfully conducted a national search and recruited two tenure-track assistant professors, our first group of new faculty members in the program’s 17-year history. Our departmental identity is rooted in community engagement, social justice education, and scholarly excellence.
