Brainstorming Conference
SDAW/Foundation on German- American Academic Relations
Deadline:
Sunday, April 1, 2018

The Stiftung Deutsch-Amerikanische Wissenschaftsbeziehungen (SDAW/Foundation on German- American Academic Relations) is continuing to solicit proposals for panels of scholars to participate in a “Brainstorming Conference” on the future of academic collaboration on transatlantic relations. The conference will take place March 22-24, 2019 in North America (prior to the ISA conference in Toronto in late March).

This is a slightly revised call for proposals in order to specify some of the goals and requirements in more detail. Scholars from North America and Germany are invited to propose small working groups with specific ideas for research projects addressing key challenges for the transatlantic community in the years ahead in the fields of politics, security, economics, political communication, and societal and cultural relations. The working groups may have a disciplinary or an interdisciplinary character and should consist of three to five scholars (with a preference for three) from universities, think tanks and other research facilities in North America, Germany, and, where appropriate, other European countries. The inclusion of junior scholars is mandatory for each working group as is at least one member from both Germany and North America. While group proposals are preferred, individual proposals will also be considered particularly if they fit in well with other group proposals.

The conference will feature a mixture of collective activities one-third of the time (e.g., plenaries on broader themes in transatlantic relations, joint lunches and dinners, and sessions with short presentations of each group on their respective research ideas and plans) and separate meetings of each working group most of the time. We expect the conference to generate both a broader transatlantic research agenda as well as specific ideas from small working groups for full-scale collaborative research projects that will be pursued in the near future. Funding for such follow-up activities may be provided by SDAW or other institutions.

Required contents of the proposal: Proposals must specify what your group would present and discuss at this broader “Brainstorming Conference” as well as plans for how your group would follow up after the conference (e.g. research proposal for third party funding; edited volume, etc.). Proposals must include a standardized title page (see following page), a detailed description of the project idea (up to two, single-spaced pages) as well as short CVs of each working group member (up to two pages per person). Proposals should be submitted by e-mail as one pdf document. Incomplete proposals cannot be considered.

The closing date for the receipt of proposals is April 1, 2018. Decisions on proposals will be made in June 2018.
