American Studies and Cultural Narratives

The Summer Academy is a collaboration of the Bavarian American Academy and the University of Kentucky to explore a theme in American Studies through a combination of keynote lectures, group work-in-progress sessions, and cultural activities, over an eight-day period, with a nominal tuition (which includes housing and cultural events) of $550. Its limited enrollment is open by competitive application. This year’s theme is “Cultural Narratives of the State in a Comparative Perspective.”

The program of the academy entails keynote lectures by US and European speakers and work-in-progress presentations by doctoral students and junior faculty. All presentations are delivered in plenary sessions, with ample time for questions and discussion. The eight-day program will also include several cultural events related to the region.

Applications are open for doctoral students and junior faculty. Applications should contain:

  • a 1-page letter of application
  • CV
  • a 2-page project description
  • one letter of recommendation
